This is the last article which will support you in transforming your great idea into a successful business. The tips listed below sequentially follow the steps you need to make. We have already covered five of six steps so let’s do the last one.
- Have a stunning, different, exceptional idea
- Choose the most suitable structure for your business
- Think branding
- Appoint an accountant
- Get ready to launch
- Open for business and start making money
Congratulations!!! You have opened your own business and it is time to run it and make money. Provided that the first five steps have been successfully completed, there should be two main challenges in front of you... management and promotion.
1. Management
Depending on who is going to manage the business, you or somebody else, you must ensure that that the manager understands the short and the long term objectives and work towards achieving them. It is also beneficial if the managers is experienced or at least can rely on the support and expertise of a consultant.
For example, a friend of mine has recently opened her own business. She has just graduated with marketing communications degree, which is not quite related to management as you can imagine. However, during her time in the university she created many useful contacts and became really well connected. So when she had to step up and manage her business, she could ask for advice and rely on people who have true insights into the catering industry. As a result, she has excelled in every single part of her job so far.
There are a few things that I would like to point out. You and your managerial stuff must get to know your customers quickly and start anticipating their needs. Never ignore the customers. Give your business time to evolve organically; do not push things too much. Make sure you do not rely on only one supplier and you have a plan B in case something goes wrong. The same apply to your customers. Despite knowing who your biggest customer is could be beneficial, do not rely only on one big client. Never ignore the market forces. You must keep researching market and adapting to it. If you are lucky enough, you might become the business who drives the market in your local area. So keep your eyes open ALL the time.
And finally, remember to your costs low and never take money out of your business to cover personal expenses. Despite the fact that high cash flow may tempt you to spend more, you can spend only as much as you have earned.
2. Promotion
Promotion is key. You must ensure that people know about you from day one. If they do know who you are, what you offer and how to find you, they will not buy.
It is your responsibility to ensure consistent message which communicates the brand values. And it does not mean that you must spend massively on branding materials. Sticky and user-friendly website, engaging Facebook page and well trained stuff are more than good beginning. Remember that not only adverts and leaflets are promotion. Every interaction with the audience is a message. So ensure that you, your managerial stuff, your front-of-house staff, your posts and website support the promotion of your business in the best possible way. Be suggestive, helpful and by no means pushy. Do not only guess what your customers want but also ask them. Be great and do not afford to cut corners.
So that being said, I can only wish you luck. Grow and prosper. Keep reading the blog and feel free to share your success story with us. We would love to hear it.
